Halloween STEM Relay

If you’re anything like me, you’re ready to do something fun for Halloween, but you want to make sure to include movement, peer collaboration, a hands on portion, as well as a chance for students to do some mental math practice.

After spending weeks thinking about how I could do this, the idea suddenly came to me! I am going to break my students into groups of three or four, and have a class relay where the students will need to solve ten halloween themed math task cards helping Gwennie the Ghost find the haunted mansion, and then they will get the supplies needed to actually build the haunted mansion!

Here is what I am going to read to my students:

This activity is very low prep and can be used for a few different age ranges. I will be using this with sixth graders, but you could use this to enrich 3-5th graders or as an intervention with lower 6-8th graders.

Prep:

• Print one HELP page to read to the class at the beginning.

• Print as many sets of task cards and answer recording sheets as the amount of groups you plan on having. I would plan for 3 to 4 students per group.

• Print as many THANK YOU pages as you have groups.

• Decide which supplies you are going to give you students and divide them up into equal groups.

• Tooth Picks and Mini Marshmallows

Unlimited Time Options

• Notecards

• Tape

• Popsicle Sticks

• Glue

• String

• Pipe Cleaners

• Paper Clips

• Sticky Notes

• Molding Clay

Set Up:

• Create piles of supplies for each group

• Each pile should include:

• One set of task cards pre-cut

• One set of answer recording sheets pre-cut (1-10 and blank lines)

• One Thank You page

• One bin of STEM supplies depending on time limit

• Optional: Whiteboards or extra scratch paper for students to show their work and so all group members are working out problems
